Tank-mixing 101 With Enlist® Herbicides

When battling tough weeds, the ability to tank-mix multiple products can give you much-needed weed control program improvements. The Enlist® weed control system has over 1,700 qualified tank-mix partners, allowing the ability to fine-tune programs to achieve the best possible weed control on your toughest acres.
With Enlist herbicides, you have more weed control options and the freedom to spray. With no calendar cutoff dates, the application window for Enlist herbicides allows farmers to formulate tank mixes that include a wide range of qualified products.
“Corteva Agriscience always recommends using multiple sites of action in the tank to help mitigate resistance,” says Greg Young, Enlist field specialist in Nebraska. “Once you have your weed control program in place, it’s equally important to follow the right tank-mix procedure to ensure more effective herbicide applications.”
Tank-mix procedures
Start with a clean sprayer before mixing a load with Enlist One® or Enlist Duo® herbicide. Begin with a half-full water carrier tank; this is important for thorough mixing of products in the tank.
Start agitation before adding the first product and continue agitation throughout mixing process. Add products one at a time, in the following order:
- AMS/water-conditioning agents. Allow five to 10 minutes to fully dissolve these products.
- Preslurry water-soluble packets. To preslurry packets, mix with water before introducing them into the tank. Cooler water requires more mixing time before the solution is ready to introduce into the tank mix. An example would be S-metolachlor.
- Wettable powders/dry flowables, including:
- Glyphosate products
- Glufosinate products, including Liberty® herbicide
- Enlist Duo herbicide at 4.75 pt./A or Enlist One herbicide at 2 pt./A
- Compatibility agents
- Liquid flowables
- Capsule suspension (CS) or suspension emulsion (SE)
- Emulsifiable concentrate (EC). Note: Do not allow concentrated products to come into contact outside the tank.
- Soluble liquids (SL)
- Crop oil concentrate (COC), methylated seed oil (MSO), nonionic surfactant (NIS) and other adjuvants
- Top off with water carrier
It’s vital to continue agitation throughout the tank-mixing process and allow enough time for recirculation between additions of each separate product. Failure to add products one at a time, lack of sufficient water during mixing or insufficient agitation can result in salting out. Applicators should continue agitation throughout application to keep all ingredients suspended.
Qualified tank-mix partners
As part of the conditions of registration for Enlist herbicides, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established a tank-mix testing protocol. One reason the drift testing protocol exists is to protect sensitive areas especially where endangered species may have habitat.
Refer to all individual product labels, supplemental labeling and fact sheets for all products in the tank mixture. Observe all precautions and limitations on the labels, including application timing restrictions, soil restrictions, minimum plant-back interval and rotational guidelines. Use according to the most restrictive precautionary statements for each product in the tank mixture.
In some cases, the addition of tank-mix products may cause increased crop response, such as leaf speckling. Applications of emulsifiable concentrate products, or crop oils — including COCs, methylated seed oil concentrate (MSOC), high surfactant oil concentrates (HSOC) and vegetable-based oils — are more likely to result in a crop response. These are temporary, and the crop will grow out of it.
